American football may be loosely defined as a cross between rugby football and association football, but it really isn’t the same as either at all. Apart from anything else, it’s a much more physical game than association football, and it’s not considered quite as rough and physical as rugby.
This is why it’s so important to know what Savannah sporting equipment and custom uniforms to wear when you play American football.
Administered by the National Football League (NFL) this type of football is played on a field that is 100 yards long (plus a 10 yard end zone at each end) and 53 yards wide.
Each team has 11 players (all of whom wear regulation custom uniforms), on the field at one time, and their ultimate aim is to score points. They can do this by:
Scoring a touchdown by carrying the ball over the goal line, making a “fumble” recovery in the end zone, catching the ball in the zone behind the goal line, or by the kicking team recovering an untouched kickoff in the end zone. A successful touchdown is worth six points.
- In the event of a touchdown, the offense can take a kick from the two-yard line for a conversion which, if successful will score an extra point. Alternatively the offense can run or throw the ball into the end zone as in a touchdown. Done successfully this scores two points, but it is more difficult than a conversion or point after touchdown (PAT).
- When a touchdown isn’t possible, it may be possible to kick field goal. The ball may be kicked from anywhere, but it must go through the uprights of the goal, and over the crossbar. It is worth three points, and is commonly used to decide play near to the end of a game.
- If an opposing team member is tackled by an offensive ball carrier, behind his goal line, this is called a safety and it is worth two points.
